Throughout the world there are two thousand Italian Counts of Monte Cristo, our compatriots locked up in prison, terrible places where human rights and dignity are trampled on a daily basis or do not even exist. One of these is Maurizio Cocco, an engineer from Fiuggi who is dying in a prison in Ivory Coast. I told Il Tempo his story. I will continue to fight so that our compatriots see their rights respected and are freed, if innocent, or brought back to Italy to serve their sentence with dignity.
