There is an extraordinary bond between the U.S. and the Italian-American community, which has contributed to the growth of the country that welcomed it and, after the tragedy of 9/11, is also linked to this nation in sharing grief for those who died in the attack that forever changed the face of America: there were 211 Italians.
I arrived in the U.S., just in New York City, a month after the terrorist attack: it was a life lesson for me to see a people rise up united, proud and stronger than before. Today, after 23 years, as an Italian American I can say that “we will never forget” is not a slogan but a warning to those who think they can strike back at the United States and the communities that are part of it.
A prayer for the 2977 victims of that day and for the 4343 people who died later from cancers and respiratory diseases related to the aftermath of the attacks.
