Antonio Di Pietro’s comments on irregularities in the voting of Italians abroad have finally shed light on a phenomenon that is too often ignored.
For years, we have witnessed a handling of our fellow citizens’ votes unworthy of a democratic country, with illicit activities that distorted the election results.
As Antonio Di Pietro recalled, the Justice Referendum must not be affected once again by these distortions. As the Italians in the World Committee for the Yes vote in the referendum, we will work not only to mobilize Italian communities abroad, but above all to ensure the proper conduct of voting operations.
But vigilance is not enough, a structural change of pace is needed. We strongly hope for the adoption of in-person voting for non-EU countries as well, aligning the procedures with what is already happening successfully in Europe. Only by eliminating the obsolescence of the postal system can we ensure that every vote is free, secret, and secure.
Democracy cannot travel by regular mail. It’s time to restore dignity to the vote of Italians abroad
