September 11. 411 victims of Italian and Italian-American origin. Terrorism wanted to sow fear, they left us the courage.
Paragraph
Today we pay tribute to all 2,977 innocent victims of ’9/11. Not just those in the Twin Towers: New York, the Pentagon, the four hijacked planes, all the families broken by one of the most ferocious terrorist attacks in contemporary history.
Paragraph
I took part in the commemoration at the Consulate General of Italy in New York, together with Consul General Giuseppe Pastorelli and Minister for Disabilities Alessandra Locatelli. For us Italians, this day has a special meaning.
Paragraph
411 names, 411 stories, 411 indelible ties between Italy and the United States.
Paragraph
Among them firefighters, policemen, doctors, rescuers. As thousands of people ran out of hell, they ran in. It is the image that tells the distance between civilization and barbarism: terrorists were ready to die to kill innocents, those men were ready to die to save them.
Paragraph
9/11 is not just a tragedy. It is a planned and deliberate terrorist massacre. Twenty-five years later we must continue to call evil by its name, without extenuating circumstances and without ambiguity.
Paragraph
But terrorism has failed. He wanted to leave us fear and terror. The victims and heroes of that day left us courage, a sense of duty, sacrifice.
Paragraph
Those 411 names also tell who Italians are in the world: men and women who arrive, work, build, integrate without forgetting their roots. And when the hardest time comes, I’m there.
Paragraph
The terrorism that killed them belongs to the shame of history. Their names belong to eternity.
Paragraph
Never Forget, lest we forget.
