At Panorama.it’s Piazza meeting, Stefano Piazza and I discussed the visa trafficking case between Italy and Bangladesh, which concluded with the two convictions and the more than €600,000 in fines imposed by last week’s Rome Court ruling.
The scheme was tried and tested and unscrupulous: Bangladeshi citizens paid up to 15,000 euros for a work visa obtained by bribing unfaithful officials in Dhaka. A mechanism that circumvented controls on real hiring, turning the right to work into an illegal bargaining chip.
The final result, however, confirms that the State is there and does not lower its guard. We cannot allow the visa system to become a business for criminals and corrupt individuals. I will continue to fight for increased preventive controls in diplomatic missions, and for those who choose to come to Italy to do so according to the rules, respecting the dignity of their work.
Legality always wins.
