Is the world too big for a parliamentarian? No.
It’s only too big for a parliamentarian organized too small.
With the new Electoral Law in the Chamber, the current four divisions for Italians abroad become two: Europe and the Rest of the World.
True – an MP will politically represent a much larger area than the current one. And I’m in favor. As an entrepreneur, I never chose a corner of the world to close myself off to. I always preferred to compete in the world, with a team capable of being present, listening, and intervening wherever needed.
Policy should not work differently. An MP cannot represent millions of fellow citizens alone. We are a team of over ten people. We collect reports, open dossiers, work with consulates and embassies, enter ministries, write amendments, and follow every step to the result.
Proximity is not measured in kilometers. And not even in the number of dinners you attend. I’m probably the MP who’s had the fewest dinners in their constituency. I don’t like the politics of tables, photographs and ritual presences. Because dinners produce photographs. Work produces laws.
I prefer to know a problem, to tackle it in the ministries, to fight it in the Committees and in the parliamentary chambers, to take home a solution. And that’s what we’ve done over the years.
Of course, I will continue to be physically present in communities. But true presence isn’t being seen one evening: it’s being there the next day, when you have to respond and resolve. The new size of the constituency does not distance the MP from the voters. Just raise the bar to represent them.
We don’t have to reduce the world for anyone to manage it. Because the world is never too big. Politics alone can be too small
