Another promise kept for Italians abroad!
I have always fought in Parliament for a clear goal: to eliminate the gap between Italy and our citizens around the world, breaking down the bureaucracy that too often makes you feel like second-class citizens compared to the mother country.
Today we are taking a historic step forward.
Starting today, June 1°, 2026, a fundamental provision of Law No. 11 of January 19, 2026, will finally come into force: all citizens registered with AIRE will be able to apply for an Electronic Identity Card (EIC) directly from any Italian municipality, and no longer exclusively through the consular network.
If you are in Italy for vacation, work or to hug your loved ones again, simply go to the Municipality of your choice to complete the process, with maximum flexibility.
The release will take place in the same way as for consulates, but you will have two convenient options for collection:
Direct pickup at the City Council counter where you applied.
Shipping abroad, in the comfort of your home, to your home address.
For operational details and reservations, I invite you to contact directly the offices of the Italian Municipality to which you intend to go.
This is how Fratelli d’Italia and the government deliver on their commitments: with concrete action, simplification, and respect for our community abroad, which represents an invaluable resource for the nation.
My commitment to the protection of your rights and to unimpeded citizenship does not stop there.
Italy is ever closer to you
